Jennifer
Grais started on her equine journey as a young girl in love with
horses. Thrown from a horse at age 11 she suffered short-term
paralysis and a fractured back. Through exercise and physical
therapy she recovered fully, but she did not return to riding.
Fascinated with physical therapy and feeling greatly in debt to
the therapists who had helped her, she majored in sports medicine
at college, but after graduating her love of music won out. She
became a successful singer/songwriter most recently singing on
tour with Jackson Browne and appearing as a guest artist on Steve
Roach's album, "Holding
the Space."
Shamanic
Healing work was a natural fit with Jennifer's love of nature
and her deep wish to transform her own pain and that of others.
Her music and her shamanic work continued to show her new worlds
and open her heart. But her love of music, horses, and healing
didn't come together until reading Linda Kohanav's book, "The
Tao of Equus'. The book affected her deeply and helped to explain
her childhood longing for horses. She applied for the Apprenticeship
Program in Equine Experiential Learning in Tucson, Arizona and
was accepted. She writes:
"Linda's ideas and methods resonate so deeply with who I
am and who I am becoming. This work feels like an opportunity
to be introduced to the spirit of the horse, not just the body
of the horse. I love every explanation and theory in Linda's book.
But experiencing the wisdom of the horse directly is truly heart
opening. I feel that all my training in music and shamanism and
emotional awareness brought me to this place. The work in the
round pen feels a bit like a waking dream. I receive information
from the horse in my body as well as in words. The horses are
incredible teachers."
Her
work with horses (both on the ground and riding) over the following
year helped to unlock and heal the trauma of her original horseback
riding accident as well as develop skills in emotional fitness,
authentic community building, setting boundaries, and leadership.
Thundering sky herd
of spirit horses
descending
hoofbeats, heartbeats
boom-boom!, boom, boom!
call of the world drum
bringing union
power
women and horses
dancing around the fire
birthing a new song
sing!
sing!
sing!
